The first time I remember hearing Starz, was in December 2011 when my dad was playing his CD copy of Violation, one day. I remember hearing one song and I asked him who it was, and for some reason a little bit of time passed before I properly checked them out.
Somehow, that wasn’t until about May 2012. I’m not sure why, but I know that I listened to singular songs and once I had heard Coliseum Rock in full, it astounded me that I only skipped around to different songs instead of listening to their albums in full.
Starz plays a role in my iconic music taste expansion story where, one day, I listened to both “Coliseum Rock” and “What We Saw From The Cheap Seats” by Regina Spektor and it caused me to realize that I didn’t have to only listen to one musical genre.
There were no limits, and now that I’m older, I realize that there never was.
What this experience showed me was that I could listen to a rock album and a singer-songwriter album and I could like both, my brain wasn’t only in one place and I became insanely open minded with music due to this.
As time passed, I had a phase with each of their albums and I know them all from front to back!!
Starz has always stuck with me because they were among the first great bands I got into my teenage years.
All I really listened to when I was a teenager was Queen, Starz, Angel, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Ting Tings. When I got into record collecting, I got into even more stuff and I have so much amazing stuff in my collection.
Getting back to our main topic.
To me, Starz is great because there’s so many elements of cool and the fact that it’s combined puts their cool factor on a high level.
I’ve honestly never heard anything that sounds like Starz. They are very unique, and there’s a lot more going on than you hear in most rock bands.
You have to listen to it and see what you think.
